Parents really don’t spend much time trying to figure out little smiles as much as they do when it comes to baby’s cries. A baby’s cry is what a new parent most dreads hearing because it’s hard to differentiate just what it is that baby needs and when a new parent can’t solve baby’s apparent problem with the norm of a diaper change, a meal, a hug or some playtime … parents panic. All baby’s cry for a reason and it’s alright to pick up a baby every time they cry because there’s no such thing as a ‘spoiled baby’. Although there may be times when baby cries just because he/she wants to feel the warmth of Mom or Dad, that’s still a good reason.
One of the most difficult lessons a new parent will learn is how to ‘read’ baby’s cries, each baby is unique and his/her cries are different, usually only Mom or Dad knows best. If baby is crying, pick him/her up, cuddle them, rock them, check their clothing to see if anything is annoying them, change their diaper, see if baby is hungry and if nothing seems to please baby then pull baby into a snug hug and sing. Baby’s love rhythmic sounds and vibrations! Sometimes baby will pull on his/her ear and some parents make the mistake of believing baby has just found it … not true. When a baby grabs at a specific organ over and over then that’s a good sign that something is wrong and parents should get baby in to the doctor, usually ear touching or pulling is a sign of an ear ache or infection. Earaches or infections could lead to the installation of tubes in baby’s ears if the situation is left untreated. Eventually when baby’s ears hurt Mom and Dad will know by the screaming … when it’s too late. A baby that slobbers or chews on lots of things could mean that baby’s gums or teeth hurt. Teething has been known to start very early and today it’s not uncommon to see a three month old with a few teeth. Some of the most common trademarks that come along with teething are fever, diarrhea, chewing on hands or objects sometimes uncontrollably. Massaging baby’s gums with pain reliever or baby teething gel, giving them pain reliever, giving baby a chilled plastic teething ring to chew on or a chilled washcloth will give some relief. Baby may seem to be a mysterious little creature that is sometimes hard to understand but just ash yourself what you would do if you couldn’t speak and you’ll see that behavior really isn’t so complicated.
