After that first month, you will of course be suffering from lack of
sleep and may be experiencing some frustrations. But that's when your
baby becomes more of a social being. Baby will start playing with you,
smiling and making baby noises. Their physical development is such that
they are able to better recognize colors and shapes, and they will be
able to recognize your voice immediately.
By the third month, you and baby have both settled into more of a
routine, and that little personality is starting to shine through. Baby
has developed enough to be able to want to explore, and even though
they can't walk around yet, they will look with great fascination at
the smallest of things.
By four months, baby will start to imitate speech and may be able to
pull up to a sitting position. Your baby should now be able to sleep
through most of the night, and take two or three naps during the day.
By six months, baby can sit without assistance. Pacifier use should be
limited, and this would be the time to start considering giving baby a
full size crib and his or her own bedroom.
By nine months, baby will be able to stand up while holding onto
something, and will start to imitate sounds. This is a time of
exploration, but baby will be strongly attached to parents and may show
some anxiety when being separated. By the end of the first year, birth
weight should have about tripled, and baby will be taking those first
few steps and saying those first few words.
