If pregnancy is your goal, it is important to time intercourse to
increase your chances of fertilization within that 24 hour window. To
be successful you will have to discover when your ovulation begins; for
most women it takes place about 14 days before the beginning of your
period. For a 28 day cycle, ovulation should occur about 14 days after
the first day of your last period.
To optimize your chances of egg fertilization during ovulation it is a good idea to begin having intercourse with your partner about 5 days prior to your calculated ovulation and 2 to 3 days after.
It is not uncommon for it to take 4 to 6 months to become pregnant after you begin to try and conceive. Even 10 months is not unheard of since each cycle only offers about a 20% chance of success. After a year of trying to become pregnant without success, it may be time to consult a fertility specialist to help you achieve your goal. Predicting the exact hour of ovulation can be tricky, but if you can manage to do this you will increase your chances of success a great deal. Womenís body temperatures rise during ovulation; by keeping track of your temperature and recoding any changes it should be much easier to predict when exact the magic hour will come. Another very helpful tool is an ovulation predictor kit. These are available at your local drug store and are usually located near the Home Pregnancy Tests. These ovulation tests can be very helpful in helping you plan the appropriate time to engage in intercourse. Some additional steps to increase your chances include, not smoking, and not using any commercial lubricant that contains spermicide. Many lubricants such as K-Y Jelly contain spermicide. Also it may be a good idea to rest in a reclined position for at least an hour after intercourse to allow the sperm more time to swim toward the egg. For many women, conceiving is no problem at all, but if you do find that you are having trouble becoming pregnant, donít worry with a good doctor your should be holding your bundle of joy very soon.
