The exact cause of Postpartum Depression is not known, but it is believed that some ofthe contributing factors may include the mental health of the patient before giving birth, genetic causes, as well as rapid hormonal changes.

If you or a loved one has had a baby recently, there are some symptoms you may want towatch for. The signs of Postpartum Depression include:

Loss of sexual interest Crying for no apparent reason Feelings of guilt Sadness Anger Feelings of despair and/or worthlessness May become forgetful Difficulty in making decisions Poor concentrationInsomnia Exhaustion Excessive sleeping but still feeling exhausted Changes in appetite

There is treatment options available that can help someone struck with PostpartumDepression cope with the symptoms. The first step that should be taken if depression hasset in after giving birth is to talk to your doctor.

He may prescribe medication andrecommend counseling as well as support groups. Those suffering from postpartumdepression can expect a full recovery; how quickly recovery is possible depends on howearly treatment was started.

In rare cases, Postpartum Psychosis may develop after the birth of a child; women whohave had a problem with Schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder are most at risk. In addition,if any of these conditions tend to run in the family it is important to keep a lookout forany signs of depression or psychotic behavior.  This is a very serious mental health issueand should be recognized and treated as soon as possible. Along with treatment, there are some additional steps you can take to cope withPostpartum Depression. Taking as much stress out of you life as possible will help a greatdeal.  Have other family members share in some of the household duties and make surethat you get as much rest as possible. Sleep when baby sleeps to ensure you are gettingplenty of rest and relaxation.

After a period of relaxation, take your life back. Work on things that you like, start a dietand exercise program, and by all means go on a shopping trip for some new clothes. Thehigher your self esteem, the less likely you are to feel depressed.

Finally, realize that just because you cannot do everything and handle everything on yourown, does not mean you are not a great mother. Take the time to just have fun and enjoyyour new bundle of joy.
